The Agent Hunt: An Actor's Journey
Actors working on set.
The most common question I get from actors when they first start at my Baton Rouge film acting school, Love Acting is “How do I get an agent?”. An agent is someone who submits the actor for projects that fit their demographic and acquires the audition for the actor. Most Louisiana agents that I know have about 100 clients. Louisiana is a Hollywood South and has a limited pool of very talented agents who work closely with the small pool of casting directors here in the state.
Most of the time agents are looking for a few important things:
They want you to have taken class for on-camera acting to prepare you for the art of auditioning for film.
They are looking to see if you have had any experience being on a film set.
They want to have a diverse roster of all different types of people and different ages, so they’re looking for unique-looking faces.
So people ask me “How do you get an agent if you don’t have any experience?”. I mostly tell them they must start with acting classes and networking with filmmakers and try to get involved in the independent movie scene in whatever area you live in. Agents will ask to see a reel (footage from a movie you’ve been in) or a scene from an acting class that you’ve worked hard on & that you believe showcases your talent.
I wish I could say that getting an agent is an easy thing to do as an actor but many actors spend several years putting together their headshots and their experience in taking different classes and participating in independent films before they ever get an agent.
Here at Love Acting, we don’t guarantee that you will get an agent, but we do help you in your journey of transitioning into a professional actor in many ways. We love helping people fall in love with acting and in the meantime, develop their careers. We do an Actor’s Showcase every year and we invite the agents and casting directors in the area of New Orleans and Baton Rouge. We introduce the talent of Love Acting to as many directors and producers in the area as well.
