Theo of Golden- Book Review
I have found the perfect book: Theo of Golden by Allen Levi. I have a habit of reading 5 books at a time, and when I say reading I mean listening to multiple books at a time on Audible. This could be my ADHD brain that needs the stimuli or just the need to consume lots of creativity all at once— I don’t really know what the main issue is. But to be a creative person and have output that is in your life, you must “fill the cup”, shall we say. I find reading fiction is one of my great escapes and allows me to feel like I'm in another world even while I'm driving carpool or sitting in traffic. After multiple recommendations I added my new favorite book Theo of Golden to my hit list.
I had just finished reading The Correspondent by Virginia Evans. And I thought I loved that book because it is an amazing story and is very well written. I had a conversation with my sister after reading that book about grief and letting go, and I thought wow, it’s so well done. She said “Just wait until you read Theo of Golden— you will love it”. And I thought “There’s no way you could beat The Correspondent, it was so good, how could that be better?” So on my first trip to the store, I popped on Theo of Golden, and I am now listening to it for the fourth time. The way this book is written makes you feel peaceful from the start. When you meet Theo you fall in love with him and want to go where he is going. He’s a little old man from Portugal, and we don’t know the history of his life for most of the book, and somehow the writer Allen Levi is able to help us care about this old man and his small acts of kindness that turn into great friendships with just regular people. The way Theo is able to see beauty in the ordinary makes you want to slow down and embrace every moment in life as a very special moment. The way he cherishes and loves the arts somehow validates my decision to become an artist and live with this urge to create on the inside as a medal of honor instead of a curse.
If you are a creative person or just a person with a soul and heart, you must read this book. I will not go into the details because I don’t want to spoil it for you or build it up so much that you will never touch it because you know I will have ruined it for you because there’s no way to fulfill the goodness it should, so I’ll stop here. This book has changed my life, and I feel something quite ironic about the fact that this author had never written a book before. It allows me to hope that maybe I am just touching the surface of what my true destiny is as an artist. And I feel we should all be encouraged to try to create no matter what our age is or experience in the field we are in has been. If Allen had not taken this risk and created this book we all would’ve missed out on his genius. Someone should adapt this book into a screenplay. I'm sure they already are, and I'm jealous.
