Social Media for Actors
I hate to say it but social media is really important right now. I hate telling actors this, but then I have to help cast projects and what is the first thing filmmakers/casting directors do? They go to Instagram to see what the actor’s personality is like, their following is like. People like to be able to hire someone who is cool and who has their own following and has built some platform of exposure for themselves. Casting like this happens in the small indie world as well as the big tv/film market. I feel like the competition is different these days based on how social media has affected casting. Maybe because we don’t go into the room to audition anymore, the casting directors have to get a sense of who the actor is from their Instagram.
I don’t mind doing social media for myself as an actor, but it takes a lot longer than most people would think. Each post takes a lot of thought and needs to be compelling. It feels like there must be a stargety behind what you post and what you want people to know about you. If you’re just getting started as an actor and don’t know where to spend your time, what I’ve learned through owning a small business, you have to spend 10% of your money on advertising. So I'd say to young actors: spend about 10% of your time working on your social media, which is your advertising. Of course, also spend more time becoming a great actor, pursuing work, working out, and taking care of yourself, but you have to spend time advertising through your website and your social media. Don’t be shy— go for it.
I will do another blog post later about what to post. More coming soon.
